Universal was bred in Czechia, but as of 1991 is no longer listed as a commercial variety. It is however still being produced in the US and has since become a darling of the craft brewing industry.

It has a pleasant noble aroma and a mild bitterness, good storage stability and due to its nearly identical oil profile, it is an excellent substitute for Hallertau Mittelfrüher.
